Alex Dowding is a teacher in his fifties, drifting through his last few years before retirement. His life is too comfortable for him to want to confront awkward questions, such as why his son is a virtual stranger or why his wife had been so unhappy before her untimely death. Still less does he want to analyse those aspects of his character which already make him subconsciously uneasy.
Emma Tomlinson is one of Alex's pupils and lives alone with her mother. Bright, pleasant, somewhat reserved, she had done little to attract his attention. However, when her mother is diagnosed with terminal cancer, Emma's life is thrown off balance to such an extent that the mild crush she has long had on her teacher becomes an obsession. Feeling that she has nothing to lose, she contrives a meeting with Alex in his own home which sets off a series of events, destroying Alex's superficial complacency and forcing him to seriously reassess his life.
A novella.

I had lots of things to to today but i started reading this book and have been unable to stop until i finished it. I read it on kindle for pc and found the page turning procedure a bit confusing but soon got the hang of it. Also, unlike when reading a book i had no idea how long it was so the ending was unexpected but quite exhilarating because i didn't have the clues one does with a book (very few pages left) that a conclusion of some sort is nigh. When i started reading i thought the story was going to be quite predictable given the premise of a schoolgirl crush on a much older teacher. What i found confounded my expectations. The central subject of the book is love, but also the essential loneliness of so many people. It explores the courage, convictions and realism of Emma and the social and emotional isolation of Alex in a way i never expected.
The way the central characters relate reminded me of the work of Iris Murdoch and Anita Brookner and also of the film The Remains of The Day.
It is a moving and challenging book and completely gripping. Yes, it's a love story but it also makes the reader ask questions about the basis of one's own life . Highly recommended.
