Zev de Valera had already established himself as one of my favorite authors with his novel, "The Ultimate Submission."Imagine my excitement to dive into his "The Talisman Ring of Amenhotep". What a treat. Not only the pleasure of his prose once more but---since I love all things ancient Egypt---a story centered on Egypt and mystery and curses and all that delicious stuff!
Mr. De Valera did not disappoint!
This was quite a short book, an easy read in the time department. Just a taste enough to whet one's appetite and direct them to his upcoming sequel.
One thing I love about this author's work is his comfort levels with his portraits of men and their intimacy. His grit and---well, what I find fabulous about his work---his urgency. His descriptions of men, their bodies, their needs....flawless, real, so base, so easy and bold. Sex but oddly not just...sex. Something deeper, more primal. I don't see this very often and I relish having found it in his writing.
The story itself is gorgeous. Mix of the modern world and its study of ancient history, glitz, glamour, mystery, sensuality, tension. As I read---and I'm not just saying this to flatter---it was quite like watching a wonderful film. Very colorful, very vivid. Written in glorious Technicolor.
Hats off to another success by Zev De Valera! Cannot wait for the sequel!

I was trolling around goodreads yesterday looking for something fun to read after finishing a heavy book and found this wonderful short. I had read Mr. de Valera's book The Ultimate Submission and enjoyed his style. Unlike the previous book which was heavy on the sex, this gem turned out to be a campy ride with Julian Wingate and a special ring. It seems that while it's being worn, the ring imbues the wearer with some rather unique powers. Unfortunately, it turns out that the ring has a twin currently owned by a wealthy businesswoman known as the Directrix. The story has the perfect blend of the possible and the questionable that kept me reading and grinning. Julian is the perfect good guy while the Directrix is the perfect female villain and they play off of each other well. The secondary characters are well fleshed out and add a lot to the story. The story flows smoothly and the surprise ending leaves just enough of an opening for a sequel. Don't be put off by the cover just because it lacks a naked, buff torso. This short story delivers. Highly recommended.

I have to say, there was quite a bit to take in with this story, especially for its smaller size. The beginning of the story takes place in Egypt where you get a bit of set up with Julian and his husband Theo. I liked the initial introduction with the work Theo was doing; it made for an interesting change from other stories I’ve read that take place in the same area/time. There’s a time jump after that where the plot of the book really gets going but I didn’t mind that at all as things would’ve dragged on otherwise.
The focus of the story is obviously on Julian and the ring he acquired while in Egypt but there’s a lot more to things than that; the ring is more than just a pretty bauble and the mystery surrounding it is a pretty big one. Add in some shady secondary characters and a new love interest and I was fairly invested in seeing where the story would go. I do wish that there had been a little more information about Julian’s new beau (what you get is fairly minimal) and as I didn’t get to see the start of their ‘relationship’, things just seemed to progress from friends to ‘hot and heavy’ too quickly. That’s just me, though.
Overall I enjoyed the story and the mystery surrounding both the ring and the people after it and I look forward to continuing the series to see where the author takes things. If you’re looking for a shorter read with a hint of mystery you may want to give this one a look.
